Jurassic & Cretaceous - Ammonite
The ammonite is one of the most famous cephalopods of the Mesozoic, related to the squid, octopus, and the living fossil Nautilus. Ammonites had chambered, coiled shells, reaching 2m in diameter. They lived in oceans 200-66 million years ago.
Ediacaran - Arborea
Arborea arborea is the best-known fossil 'frond' from the Ediacara Biota of South Australia and is ~555 million years old. It lived anchored to the seafloor, in the shallow, tropical waters of what is now the Flinders Ranges.
Cambrian - Anomalocaris
Anomalocaris daleyae is the largest animal of the Cambrian of Australia, reaching over half a meter in length. It lived ~515 million years ago in the waters off what is now Kangaroo Island.
Ediacaran - Spriggina
Spriggina floundersi has only been found in South Australia in ~555-million-year-old rocks. It was named in honour of the geologist Reg Spigg, who discovered the Ediacara Biota in 1946, and the collector Ben Flounders, who found the first specimens in 1957.
Ediacaran - Tribrachidium
Tribrachidium heraldicum lived ~555 million years ago on the seafloor in the shallow, tropical waters of what is now the Flinders Ranges. Its domed shape helped get its food particles by absorption through its skin.
Cambrian - Redlichia
Redlichia rex was the largest trilobite of its time in Australia. Trilobites are an extinct class of marine arthropods that first appeared ~520 million years ago during the Cambrian Period.
